My Charcoal & Oil Paint Process
I've been working to develop this process for years and I had a major breakthrough a few months ago. A couple tweaks to my normal charcoal on canvas process along with enhancing the deepest shadows with oil paint added so much depth and emotion.
• First I create an underdrawing using liquid charcoal and willow charcoal.
• Then I paint over it with an oil wash and quickly work to remove the paint from highlight areas.
• Finally, I paint the darkest shadows to create contrast and add subtle and intricate details.
I believe this is my best charcoal and oil piece ever and I feel fortunate it all came together on such a special and historical work of art.
